About MusicToolLab
MusicToolLab is a growing collection of fast, free, musician-friendly tools for music theory, practice, and songwriting. The goal is simple: give real musicians practical tools that load quickly, stay out of the way, and help you make better music.
What MusicToolLab Is
MusicToolLab started as a small set of utilities for solving everyday problems: What key is this song in? What’s the tempo? How do I transpose these chords for a different singer?
Over time it grew into a full toolkit for:
- Finding and analyzing tempo, keys, and scales
- Transposing chords and building chord progressions
- Generating song ideas and lyrics with AI
- Learning structure and craft through step-by-step songwriting guides
Core Music Theory & Practice Tools
These tools are designed to be quick, visual, and easy to use in a practice room, studio session, or writing session:
- Tap BPM Tool – Tap along with your song to instantly calculate tempo (BPM).
- BPM Finder – Upload audio and detect tempo in your browser.
- Chord Finder – Select notes and identify the chord (major, minor, 7th, sus, dim, aug, and more).
- Chord Transposer – Transpose guitar and piano chords to any key instantly.
- Chord Progression Generator – Build progressions in any key using Roman numerals and Nashville numbers.
- Capo Finder – Find the right capo fret and chord shapes to play in any key.
- Circle of Fifths – Interactive circle of fifths with diatonic chords for each key.
- Roman Numeral Converter – Convert chord progressions into Roman numerals.
- Key Finder – Upload audio and estimate the key (major/minor) locally in your browser.
- Scale Finder – Generate scales and diatonic chords (major, minor, modes, pentatonic, blues).
AI Tools for Songwriters
On top of the core music theory tools, MusicToolLab includes AI-powered helpers for lyric writing and idea generation:
- Song Idea Generator – Create fresh song concepts with mood, genre, title ideas, BPM, key, chord suggestions, and hook angles.
- Free AI Lyrics Generator – Generate verses, choruses, and bridges for country, rock, pop, hip-hop and more. Built to give you a strong draft that you can then edit into your own voice.
- AI Tools Overview – A simple overview page that explains how the AI tools fit together and how to use them alongside the songwriting guides.
Songwriting Guides & Education
Tools are only half the story. MusicToolLab also includes long-form guides that walk through the craft side of songwriting:
- Songwriting Hub Overview
- How to Write a Catchy Chorus
- Song Structure Guide
- How to Overcome Writer’s Block
- How to Write Country Song Lyrics
Each guide is written so you can apply the ideas directly inside the tools: draft a structure, generate variations, and then refine the song into something personal.
Who MusicToolLab Is For
MusicToolLab is built for:
- Songwriters who want practical tools instead of cluttered all-in-one platforms
- Guitarists and pianists who need quick theory help while practicing or arranging
- Producers who need to check BPMs, keys, or progressions on the fly
- Artists experimenting with AI as a writing assistant, not a replacement
How the Tools Work
Most tools run directly in your browser with lightweight JavaScript. For analysis tools that process audio (like BPM Finder and Key Finder), the goal is to keep everything as fast and clear as possible so you can stay focused on making music.
The site is intentionally minimal: no forced sign-up wall just to tap BPM or transpose chords, and pages are designed to load quickly even on slower connections.
Roadmap & Future Plans
MusicToolLab will continue to evolve with:
- More songwriting guides across different genres
- Additional AI-assisted tools for lyric editing, arrangement ideas, and practice routines
- Refinements to existing tools based on real-world use and feedback
If you’ve found the tools useful or have ideas for what would genuinely help your workflow, the best way to support the project is to keep using the tools, share them with other musicians, and check back for new additions.
Jump into the AI songwriting tools or explore the Songwriting Guides hub to start turning your ideas into finished songs.
